Course summary

Before you can enrol on this Level 3 Personal Training course you need to have completed the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing. Alternatively you can book the complete package consisting of the Level 2 and Level 3 courses together.

Personal Training is one of the most exciting and rewarding of careers. Here is your opportunity to gain the most widely recognised and respected qualification. As a Hamiltons Training Academy YMCA Awards Personal Trainer you will have the possibility of earning over 50,000 p.a. working in modern fitness centres, your own training studio or travelling the world. Your qualification will be recognised throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The YMCA Awards Certificate in Personal Training is the most widely recognised personal trainer's course. The course not only gives you all the knowledge you will need to work with your clients at an advanced level, in the gym, in their homes or other environments, but also helps you work your way through the intricacies of nutrition and weight management.

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming which is specific to the individual needs of a client.

Learners will cover:

  • Anatomy and physiology including:
    - the heart and circulatory system
    - the musculoskeletal system
    - postural and core stability
    - the nervous, endocrine and energy systems and their relation to exercise and health
  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating
  • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme
  • How to apply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme
  • How to design, manage, and adapt a personal training programme with apparently healthy adults of all ages
  • How to deliver exercise and physical activity as part of a programme for apparently healthy adults of all ages

Structure

Weeks 1 to 4: you are mainly studying Level 3 advanced Anatomy and Physiology, and Nutrition theory using our hard copy course books, manuals, DVD and study guide, along with guidance and regular contact with your course tutor (this will be the same tutor that leads you through all of the course). All of the study material is yours to keep and use as your reference text books for years to come.

Weeks 5, 6 and 7: you attend our facility for three weekends (Saturday and Sunday) to learn and practice the practical skills you need to be a Personal Trainer. You will also sit your two multiple choice theory exams, one for advanced Anatomy and Physiology and one for Nutrition. There will also be what's called continuous assessment on some of the practical parts of the course whilst you are learning them; for instance body composition testing and fitness testing.

Weeks 8, 9, 10 and 11: you will have time to complete your more advanced periodised training program and series of program cards which forms your 'Programming Personal Training Clients' module as well as practising delivering advanced training systems elements of your program. During this time you will be given a complimentary membership for you and a guest to our facility, to familiarise yourself with the assessment venue or to just simply train for yourself.

End of week 11: The weekend at the end of week 11 you will come in to have your practical assessment for the last module 'Delivering Personal Training Sessions'. We book you in for a slot of roughly two and a half hours on one of the two days (this is all you need to attend this weekend). During this time you will be assessed teaching advanced training systems and other parts of the program that you devised in the 'Programming Personal Training Clients' module to another student.
